Did you know that Jigsaw Puzzles were one of the mainstay activities in households during simpler times, generally before television or computers overtook people's lives?  Families entertained themselves by sitting around a table or on the floor, working their puzzles.

The origins of jigsaw puzzle games, in fact, go way back to the 1760s when European map makers pasted maps onto wood and cut them into small pieces. The map pieces have served as educational toys ever since.  Jigsaw puzzles then moved from education to entertainment and the puzzle pictures depicted everything from animals and scenery to modern day movie characters. In the early days, though, unlike children's puzzles, adult jigsaws had no guide picture on the box making it that much more difficult to piece together.

Right about now, you might be thinking that jigsaw puzzles were a great way to exercise your brain, and you'd be right.  To achieve peak performance and brain health, visit Brain Trackers, this Los Angeles-based company does QEEG brain mapping and behavior modification therapies to give you more brain power to achieve success whether it be in games and gaming or performing better in your job or in sports or the arts.

In the early 1900s, because wood puzzles had to be cut one piece at a time, they were pretty expensive. But within the next few years, two significant innovations emerged. Parker Brothers, the famous game manufacturer, introduced figure pieces into one of its puzzle brands which made puzzles a bit easier to assemble and they also moved to an interlocking style that reduced the risk of spilling or losing pieces.

In 1909, because of the success of these "Pastime" puzzles, Parker Brothers stopped making games and devoted its entire factory to puzzle production. Jigsaw puzzles continued in popularity through the Great Depression in 1929.

Another important development was the introduction of die-cut cardboard puzzles for adults. Mass production and inexpensive cardboard allowed the manufacturers to cut prices substantially.   Wood puzzles eventually disappeared and companies went out of business.  After the mid 1970s, there was another resurgence with jigsaw puzzle experimentation including pop-up figure pieces.  Today, jigsaw puzzle aficionados can choose from a number of different styles of jigsaws and both cardboard and more extravagant wood puzzles are available.
